Intro

At Family Literacy Advocates, our dream is to pass on a love of books and reading to the next generation, beginning at the earliest ages. Books are shared stories, connecting individuals across continents and generations, providing our greatest link to humanity as a whole.

It is a huge challenge today to encourage everyone- children, teens, and adults alike- to be drawn out of ourselves, set down our absorbing culture, and allow our minds to be stretched by the experiences of another place and perspective. Our goal is to provide a welcoming space for young people to nurture this gift, and for adults to recapture the wonder of time spent in a book.

About

Reading begins with a grasp of language, but comprehension occurs at a much deeper level. Emotions begin in the womb, and from the time a baby is born they seek to express those needs in a way that others can translate.

Our task is to gradually transfer to children the means to communicate their inner lives to the outside world, and to help them understand the emotions and experiences of others. Early communication tools- such as sign language, adult interaction, and exposure to a growing vocabulary- work hand in hand with the simple act of reading aloud to help those ages 0-5 begin the process of personal autonomy in the world of literacy. We are passionate about keeping these young, developing minds free from the artificial stimulation that surrounds them, and exposing them to all the cognitive “fresh air” that reading provides.

We are actively seeking a location in the west Wichita/Maize area that will enable us to serve a community that sees the need for this organization.

Mission

Our mission statement:

    1. To recognize and facilitate literacy in all of its aspects: Reading, Writing, Communicating, Understanding.
    2. To celebrate the God-given gift of communication.
    3. To acknowledge the goal of communication as our means to share experiences, empathy, and primarily, salvation with all of humanity.

We are a fledgling, faith-based nonprofit, and we welcome anyone who is led to be involved, at any level. Please reach out to us!
